Course Overview

After successful competition of the unit student will be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Mode of Delivery

Mode of Delivery:

The course is delivered in a flexible manner, with an online theory component followed by a 6-hour face-to-face session for demonstration and assessments of the practical skills.

  • The students are required to complete 10-12 hours of online theory.
  • It is a requirement that this be completed prior to attending the class.
  • The online theory is made up of 9 modules

This unit is for individuals working in various capacities in any industry required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Course award

Three Units of Competency from the new HLT Health Training Package recorded on your Statement of Attainment issued after successful completion of theory and practical.

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support

Entry requirements

The following are the admission criteria for the unit in place at IHNA:

  • Applicants must be aged 18 years or over.
  • Basic Level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) knowledge required to follow the theory assessments and to demonstrate the practical skill components.
  • Basic computer skills required to complete the online theory and assessments.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is competency based and is conducted in accordance with the Health Training Package and the standards outlined in the units of competency in the industry Training Package qualifications.

It includes
  • Multiple-Choice Questionnaire with 100% pass mark at the end of the self-directed theory (must be completed prior to your practical class)
  • Simulation Based Assessments: Practical skills of this unit are performed in a simulated environment at IHNA’s nursing laboratory. This includes;
    • cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to adult and infant
    • automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
  • managed casualties, with the following:
    • anaphylaxis and EpiPen
    • asthma, puffer, spacer
    • non-life-threatening bleeding
    • choking
    • envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
    • fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, using appropriate immobilisation techniques
    • minor wound cleaning and dressing
    • nosebleed
    • shock

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

IHNA reserves the right to cancel/reschedule the intake if sufficient enrolment numbers are not there for the intake.

In the event of a cancellation or reschedule, full fee paid by the student will be refunded or the student can attend the rescheduled session.

Student can cancel the enrolment three days before the course start date and the full fee paid by the student will be refunded.

Fee is not refundable if the student withdraws from the course within two days of the course start date. That is if the course is starting on 24th of the month, the student can cancel the course till 21st with full.
