HLT37015 – Certificate III in Sterilisation Services supports the professional development of sterilisation technicians of health care facilities. The course covers cleaning and disinfecting reusable medical devices, using chemicals, sterilising loads, and managing sterilised stock. It provides graduates with a nationally recognised qualification. The training combines online theoretical study, on-campus simulation lab sessions, and practical experience in the industry.

Online theory with simulation workshop and work placement

This course is provided through the online, blended mode of delivery. It will be delivered over 550 hours, including self-paced structured e-learning as per the session plan, on-campus simulation training, assessment, and 80 hours of work-based training / professional experience placement (PEP).

Students are advised that they will be required to do unstructured self-learning. Weekly support sessions are available for this course if you require any assistance.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification; however, applicants should demonstrate ability to perform tasks as required by the industry:

IHNA Online Admission Requirements
  • Applicants are required to be 18 years old and above*
  • Successful completion of an Australian Year 10 qualification or equivalent.

*Mature age students (22+) may also be considered without the minimum education requirements. Each case will be reviewed individually to ascertain the capacity of the applicant to meet qualification requirements.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND)

All IHNA students must complete the Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) assessment to ensure that students meet the necessary requirements for successfully undertaking the course. IHNA administers the LLND test to evaluate each student’s suitability.

Digital literacy:
  • Basic computer skills covering the most common usages of a computer, including managing computer files, word processing, using spreadsheets and databases; creating presentations; finding information and communicating using computers; and being aware of social and ethical implications of Internet use.
  • Having own computer (desktop or laptop) to facilitate the training and assessment.

Professional Experience Placement (PEP) requirements:

  • A Satisfactory Police (AFP/NCC) Clearance Certificate
  • Required Immunisation
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • A valid NDIS Worker Screening Check

Note: Students must declare a disability or disorder (if any), or if they are on any medication which may require reasonable adjustments. Where a student breaches the above requirements, they could be excluded from their practical placements which may result in unsuccessful completion of the qualification.

Professional Experience Placement (PEP) is an essential component of some of the units of this qualification. IHNA Guarantees Professional Experience Placement for all its student studying Certificate III in Sterilisation Services. Students will commence the 80 hours of placement (PEP) upon completing all theory assessments including simulation-based assessments (SBA). During the PEP, students will apply the required essential knowledge and skills to demonstrate competency for each unit of this qualification.

Each student will work in pairs with a staff member under the supervision of the workplace supervisor at the PEP facility.

An IHNA Online trainer and assessor will monitor the student’s progress during the PEP. All PEPs are arranged by IHNA Online. Students may arrange PEP by themselves if preferred, as agreed with and in consultation with, the course coordinator.

Note: Where a student breaches the PEP requirements as stated in the Entry Requirements, they could be excluded from their PEP. IHNA Online will not be responsible for any such exclusion.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Students must submit a portfolio of past evidence, which may include third-party assessments, and partaking in an interview procedure. They can further have their prior learning and work experiences acknowledged in this certification. A practical demonstration of the portfolio presented by the students may also be used to evaluate student’s competencies and expertise, which will give the educators a clear idea. In addition to this mutual recognition and credit transfer allow students to have their previous formal training recognized.

Credit Transfer

Credit Transfer is only available for Australian qualifications when a student has completed the units considered necessary for a qualification at another Registered Training Organization.
